Quote of the Day

“I’m upset that friend of the show Mike Huckabee criticized Natalie Portman for having a child out of wedlock. Listen, I’m no fan of unwed mothers either, but this is Natalie Portman we’re talking about. That unborn child is Luke Skywalker.” –Stephen Colbert

Colbert is a comic and this was meant to be funny; it is. Unfortunately, people really believe that Huchabee was criticizing HER or her choice of remaining unmarried when he was actually noting (and one would know if they heard this in context) that celebrities are role models for young girls. He also mentioned statistics regarding the problem. Many prominent people have talked about the problem of young teens having babies. Now when Oprah talks about it, that’s fine.

Two problems with how Huckabee raised this compared to when someone like Oprah discusses the problem of teen pregnancy:

    1) Even though he backtracked on it, it did come across as a personal attack on Natalie Portman (who is not a young teen having a baby she cannot support and lacking prospects to get married).

    2) When Huckabee raises issues such this, especially in the form of a personal attack, it raises fears of politicians from the religious right who desire to use government to impose their moral views upon others.

To be fair, as I have pointed out in the past, Huckabee has also deviated from the most fearful aspects of the religious right on some issues, such as in arguing against a need to have prayer in public schools. Unfortunately Huckabee is also inconsistent, such as when he has both argued against the Birther attacks on Obama, and then raising his own attacks which showed Huckabee to be a rather vile, unethical individual.
