Majority of Republicans Believe Obama Sympathizes With Islamic Fundamentalists

More evidence of how delusional many Republicans are in their hatred of Barack Obama can be seen in a recent Newsweek poll. It is bad enough that large numbers of conservatives mistakenly believe that Obama is a Muslim and was born outside of the country. The latest poll shows that a majority of Republicans believe Obama “sympathizes with the goals of Islamic fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the world.”

Sam Stein summarized the results:

A full 14 percent of Republicans said that it was “definitely true” that Obama sympathized with the fundamentalists and wanted to impose Islamic law across the globe. An additional 38 percent said that it was probably true — bringing the total percentage of believers to 52 percent. Only 33 percent of Republicans said that the “allegation” (as Newsweek put it) was “probably not true.” Seven percent said it was “definitely not true.” The rest (eight percent) either didn’t know the answer or didn’t read the question.

The poll results on Obama’s approval  from those other than Republicans also casts some doubt upon the narrative that the Democrats will face heavy loses this year. It remains very possible Democrats will suffer losses if the economy does not improve as the party in power will inevitably pay the political price regardless of which party is really to blame, but the polls continue to show contradictory findings. I suspect this will continue to be the case until we are closer to the election and move voters have made up their minds.

The Republicans are just trying to “spin” the truth so that they can get supporters for the next upcoming election. If you recall the religion controversy with Obama before he was elected, its obvious that if the Democratic Party does not clear things up, the Republican Party will be at an advantage of the “fact” that Obama is Islamic–something to consider when people choose to vote for Obama or not. Although America is a secular society, religion can play an integral part in people’s voting decisions, depending on how devout the person is, and how this controversy will end up.

I concur with Mr. Chan. Republicans are certainly “trying to “spin” the truth.” Whether it is to gain support or not for the upcoming election, I am unsure. Rather, I believe that it is a clear way to discourage people from supporting Obama while he is in office. Indeed, religion “can play an integral part in people’s voting decisions.” However, it is also true that such false accusations on a political figure such as Obama are methods of lowering the public opinion. Although the majority of Americans do not believe that Obama is a Muslim trying to spread Islamic Fundamentalism, it is appalling how many conservatives do. It seems as though conservatives are attempting to halt any progress in Congress that Obama may attempt to make regarding foreign policy and issues related to the recent uproar regarding mosque plans (to be built near ground 0).In my opinion, it would not matter whether or not Obama is a Muslim.  Indeed, it would change how we look at the Obama Administration’s foreign policy. However, the fact that misinformed individuals are so quick to judge the largest growing religion on the world based on terrorist acts and to charge the President as such, because of his appeasement with Islamic nations, is completely ridiculous. Such Xenophobia and Islamophobia should not be tolerated or lauded in a society where freedom and appreciation of American’s melting pot should be supreme.
