Huckabee Wants a Small Tent

In the past Mike Huckabee has said that it’s fine to have moderates in the Republican Party. Now he is calling for a small tent. He warns that a big tent “will kill the conservative movement.” (I thought that only a silver bullet or a stake through the heart would kill them, but that’s a different topic.)  I guess it makes sense. Only a small tent party would nominate someone like Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee needs to be careful. He came in second because everyone ahead of him dropped out of the race and he picked up the votes of social conservatives who weren’t willing to countenance John McCain despite McCain’s voting record as the most fiscally conservative Senator in Washington.

The problem is that while social conservatives will vote for him when it’s a choice between him and McCain, I don’t think conservatives as a whole will choose him over candidates like Bobby Jindal or Tim Pawlenty. Their rhetoric and records are both socially and fiscally conservative.

My conservatives called Huckabee a liberal because his tax and welfare policies as governor of Arkansas. I don’t his problems on that issue will go away. That’s why McCain won. When it comes down to it, the movers and shakers of the Republican Party value tax cuts and welfare cuts above all us.
