SciFi Weekend: Doctor Who in New York and Karen Gillan on Twitter; Awake; Fringe; Sin City; Loopers; Natalie Dormer and Nudity On Game of Thrones; Maggie Smith Leaving Downton Abbey

Doctor Who has been filming in New York City this week, including the Doctor running through Central Park (video above).

Karen Gillan got on Twitter last week. When I found about it two hours after she began on Thursday she already had over 27,000 followers and now has over 70,000. According to tweets by Arthur Darvill, Karen failed to adjust her email settings, burning out her phone battery with notifications of all the new followers. Today Karen tweeted a picture with Brent Spinner and below is a picture of her tweeting with Arthur Darvill looking on.

This week Awake failed to move further away from the police procedural as they did with last week’s penguins and other scenes questioning reality, but Ricky’s Taco’s did have its moment. While not as well done as last week’s That’s Not My Penguin, the voice at Ricky’s Tacos was more difficult to explain as Britten hadn’t been drugged before hearing them. Was this just something thrown into the story, is Britten going crazy and hearing things, or are there outside forces at  work and communicating with him? The conspiracy which set up the accident has been disliked by fans writing about the show. I don’t mind if they have a subplot involving this, but not if it is just a random scene thrown into an episode as we’ve seen so far. It is interesting that Captain Harper tried to call off the hit on Britten after he resigned with plans to move away to Oregon.

The final episode of Titanic airs tonight, with ABC catching up the United States audience last night. While she did appear in the first two episodes, the third concentrates far more on Jenna-Louise Coleman’s character.

On Fringe Family Man showed that, like our Walter, alt-Broyles was willing to go to great lengths to try to save his son. Before the change in the time lines his character was killed, and in the new time line he winds up in prison. At least he didn’t go through with the plot by David Robert Jones which might have collapsed both universes. I can’t help but wonder what Jones thinks would happen to him if he succeeded. Next week appears to be another Observer episode, this time in the future.

A sequel (or perhaps prequel) to Sin City is finally going ahead with casting now underway. Above are pictures of Jessica Alba and Alexis Bledel from the original.

Here is a trailer of a Loopers, an upcoming science fiction movie with an interesting premise:

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented — but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a looper — a hired gun, like Joe — is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self for assassination.

It doesn’t have the potential for a time paradox like going back in time to kill your own self or grand parent–unless Joe’s future self responds to the situation by trying to kill the person trying to kill him (his past self). Could be good, unless it is simply a chase/action movie with a science fiction back story.

Natalie Dormer, who often appeared nude on The Tudors, joins the rampant nudity on Game of Thrones starting tonight. She has certainly demonstrated that she can handle such a role well. But why is there so much nudity on Game of Thrones? Check out this video for an explanation from Saturday Night Live. HBO announced last week that Game of Thrones has been renewed for a third season and I think it is safe to predict it will be around for several years considering the success of the show and the amount of material present in the book series.

Maggie Smith, the Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey, has requested to leave the show after the third season so she can return to movies and the stage. There had already been talk of a funeral for next season and assuming that was written before Smith’s request this might mean a second. Her death would be the most plausible way to write her out of the series.

Jessica Alba Outsmarts Bill O’Reilly

Jessica Alba has shown that she can defeat Bill O’Reilly as easily as she can beat the Silver Surfer, especially if the challenge is a history quiz:

Jessica Alba is setting the record straight: Sweden was neutral during World War II.

Alba and Fox TV show host Bill O’Reilly traded punches last week after the presidential inauguration. After Alba told a Fox reporter that O’Reilly was “kind of an a-hole;” he retaliated by calling her a “pinhead” for telling a reporter to “be Sweden about it,” assuming she meant Switzerland.

“I want to clear some things up that have been bothering me lately,” Alba blogged on MySpace Celebrity. “Last week, Mr. Bill O’Reilly and some really classy sites (i.e.TMZ) insinuated I was dumb by claiming Sweden was a neutral country. I appreciate the fact that he is a news anchor and that gossip sites are inundated with intelligent reporting, but seriously people… it’s so sad to me that you think the only neutral country during WWII was Switzerland.”

Although Switzerland is more frequently cited as an example of neutrality, Sweden did indeed follow a policy of neutrality during World War II. History point to Alba.

Mathematicians Prove Jessica Alba’s Perfection

The right wing rejects mathematical models which demonstrate climate change, but here’s some findings which they might not question. A group of Cambridge mathematicians have created a model which explains why Jessica Alba’s walk is so sexy:

The academics found that it is the ratio between hips and waist that puts the sway into a woman’s walk – and the nearer that ratio is to 0.7, the better.

This ratio provides the body with the right torso strength to produce a more angular swing and bounce to the hips during the walking motion.

Therefore, a woman with a 25in waist and 36in hips would have just the right proportions to carry off a sexy swagger as she walks.

The Jessica Alba sashay beat off competition from Kate Moss, Angelina Jolie and even Marilyn Monroe, whose walk along a railway platform in Some Like It Hot is one of the most famous in film history.

While Monroe was a fraction off the target ratio with 0.69, the Cambridge team said that Alba had the perfect proportions.

Could Jessica Alba’s perfect proportions have anything to do with that genetic enhancement she received in Dark Angel?

The Maxim Hot 100: Lindsay Lohan Tops List, Beats Mitt Romney in Unfavorability

Maxim’s Hot 100 list has been released. Some of the women on the shows followed in our television posts are included:

Yunjin Kim (Lost) 98
Ivanka Trump (The Apprentice) 83
Evangeline Lilly (Lost) 68
Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) 57
Kristin Bell (Veronica Mars) 46
Moon Bloodgood (Daybreak) 40
Jennifer Garner (Alias) 35
Elisha Cuthbert (24) 25
Ali Larter (Heroes) 6
Jessica Alba (Sin City, Dark Angel) 2

And the winner is Lindsay Lohan, who is being compared to Mitt Romney in other reports. (Comments on a recent post look at the question of whether Romney is hot.) Fewer people know who Mitt Romney is than know who Lindsay Lohan is. The two have similar favorability (in the 20s), but Lohan has almost double the unfavorability rating (41% vs. 22%). I could bring in Lohan’s Disney connection, such as with the remake of Parent Trap. There’s even a fantasy film connection, even if weak, with Freaky Friday as well as a connection with politcal movies in Bobby. But we all know that Lindsay Lohan’s is primarily known for her inability to keep her clothes totally on in public.

SciFi Friday: Get a Kiss from Jessica Alba or Seven of Nine

Get a kiss from Jessica Alba, or Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Jenna Elfman, or Loretta (Hot Lips Houlihan) Swit, and while doing so contribute money to the Humaine Society by using these postage stamps:

Speaking of Sin City, some rumors are coming out about Sin City 2. 411mania reports that Angela Jolie might be out, to be replaced by Rachel Weisz or Rose McGowan. SciFi Wire reports that Brittany Murphy is interesting in reprising her role. Of course Alexis Bledel will be back on TV next week as Gilmore Girls returns, not looking like this:

Speaking of people who have also appeared on Gilmore Girls and returning television shows, Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) gets a mentor to help him with his powers on Heroes. Christopher Eccleston, who played Doctor Who in the first season of the new series, will be joining Heroes as an invisible man named Claude, after Claude Rains, star of the 1933 movie version of The Invisible Man. His role starts on January 22, whith his character acting as a mentor for Peter. Heroes, which was renewed for a second season, also will have a new tag line to follow “save the cheerleader, save the world” when it returns. SciFi Wire has an interview with George Takei on his upcoming role as Hiro’s father.

Jericho ends its hiatus with a recap episode on February 14 followed by new episodes the following week. Some secrets will be revealed:

“By the end of the season, you will know where Jake’s been for the last five years, you will know what Hawkins’ involvement is with the bombings and who is behind the bombings,” executive producer Carol Barbee promised critics here Thursday.

We know who was behind the bombing on 24, but unfortuantely what was supposed to be a surprising end of the opening four hours had leaked out. By the time the suitcase nuclear device exploded it was expected, especially considering that we knew that both the device would be ready just as the episode ended and an attack was imminent. Exploding the bomb while under attack was the obvious conclusion for the episode to increase interest going into the regular weekly episodes. Earlier in the week I looked at the politics of 24.
