Seymour Hersh Accuses Dick Cheney Of Running Assassination Ring

Raw Story reports that Seymour Hersh has accused Dick Cheney of running an assassination ring:

Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh dropped a bombshell on Tuesday when he told an audience at the University of Minnesota that the military was running an “executive assassination ring” throughout the Bush years which reported directly to former Vice President Dick Cheney.

The remark came out seemingly inadvertently when Hersh was asked by the moderator of a public discussion of “America’s Constitutional Crisis” whether abuses of executive power, like those which occurred under Richard Nixon, continue to this day.

Hersh replied, “After 9/11, I haven’t written about this yet, but the Central Intelligence Agency was very deeply involved in domestic activities against people they thought to be enemies of the state. Without any legal authority for it. They haven’t been called on it yet.”

Hersh then went on to describe a second area of extra-legal operations: the Joint Special Operations Command. “It is a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently,” he explained. “They do not report to anybody, except in the Bush-Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. … Congress has no oversight of it.”

“It’s an executive assassination ring essentially, and it’s been going on and on and on,” Hersh stated. “Under President Bush’s authority, they’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving. That’s been going on, in the name of all of us.”

I can’t even begin to imagine a military unit acting in this manner over a period of years with absolutely no one coming forward to divulge the details.  In order to plan and execute such an assassination ring, hundreds of people would have to be involved.  For me to believe every single one of them to be complicit in the conspiracy and not leak any details is a stretch I am unwilling to make!!

Mr. Hersh needs to come forward to a U.S Attorney immediately with his evidence………….or apologize and shut up!!

Hersh has quite an impressive record of revealing government atrocities comparable to this in the past. As with the other situations he was the first to uncover, he most likely does have the evidence to prove this. He is an investigative journalist, not an agent of the U.S. Attorney’s office. He has also shown in the past that he does apologize when the ultimate evidence doesn’t back up everything he says. With his record, for you to assume he is wrong and should apologize or shut up is incredibly close minded.

I’d also add, by that logic you could argue that it was a stretch when Hersh wrote about  Abu Ghaid, or when he wrote about My Lai (including the initial cover up). These stories sounded just as incredible at first–and turned out to be true.

It is already pretty clear that Dick Cheney is a war criminal who has supported violations of the Geneva Convention with the use of torture, and that he conspired to lie the country into a war in Iraq. Considering what we already know about Cheney and the actions committed by the US Government during the Bush years, the latest story is hardly a stretch at all

As of July we now know that Hersh was right!
