McCain Picks A Far Right Cover Girl

After attacking Obama as a celebrity, McCain picks a cover girl, Sarah Palin, as his running mate.

It looks like a desperation measure, with McCain thinking that putting a woman on the ticket will be enough to pick up Clinton’s supporters. Once they realize how conservative both parts of this ticket is on abortion rights and other social issues this will hardly help. Prior to being chosen, Palin was planning to give a speech to the Republican convention opposing choice on abortion.

When Obama picked Joe Biden I noted that if McCain went ahead an picked a governor we would have a Republican ticket lacking anyone with knowledge of foreign policy. Marc Ambinder notes Palin’s lack of expertise on foreign policy. (“Not Ready ’08”, eh?)

This picks does show that the McCain campaign must realize that they cannot succeed with their attacks on Barack Obama based upon inexperience as they picked a running mate whose experience is limited to one and one-half years as governor, proceeded by being mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (population 9000) after previously serving as Miss Wasilla 1984.

Barack Obama has successfully demonstrated that he has the intelligence and judgment to be president despite limited experience in Washington–experience which far exceeds that of Sarah Palin. The lack of a running mate who is qualified to be president will also increase concerns about McCain’s age as he celebrates his birthday today.

Voting for John McCain and more of the same Republican policies was already a risky move for American. Such a choice will now look even riskier.

Cynical, desperate choice.  Excellent news, however.  Biden won’t even have to break a sweat, but he should anyway, just to be safe.
McCain obviously believes his own fiction; that he’s a foreign affairs giant and will live to be 100.  That’s the only way this makes any sense.
At least the right-wing’os will stop flappin’ their angel wings and the rifle nuts have their pin-up girlie.  Sorry if that’s sexist, but honestly what do they expect?
BTW, Wasilla had something like 5500 people when she was mayor.

This is not turning out to be a banner year for the sisterhood.  Spotlight on women that are either unqualified or married to a former president.

    Paging Claire McCaskill….stat.

I believe that if I were a Hillary supporter, I would be offended by this obvious ploy.  McCain must be scared stiff of the anti-abortion groups, or he would’ve chosen Ridge – who at least as credible experience.
Some time ago, I read that if McCain thought the race was close, he’d pick Pawlenty (who could possibly give him just enough oomph to win).  But if he felt the race was slipping away, he’d go for the Hail Mary play.  Well, Hail Sarah!
Unless she’s much, much smarter than I think she is, this isn’t going to be pretty.  And although she’s pretty, this wasn’t smart.

    Liberal Cowgirl,

It is unfortunate that the two women who have received the most publicity this year and have come the furthest, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, are two of the less qualified women in politics for national office. At least Democrats were smart enough to reject Hillary Clinton. Republicans (the party which gave us Spiro Agnew and Dan Quayle) are now stuck with Sarah Palin.

    Jerry,

Some Hillary supporters are offended. Unfortunately there really are some who are so ignorant of the issues, and have so little concern for liberal values, that they will go for a Republican ticket which includes any woman, even one who is on the wrong side of feminist issues. I provide evidence of this here.
