One of my father's college history professors was a retired Episcopal priest in his 70s... and a gay biker who looked like a Hell's Angel. And, of course, a libertarian. Heh.

On the other hand, Steve Benen basically gave up day jobs for blogging and turned it into a job. He worked at The Carpetbagger Report as if it was a job for years. He would rarely be away from the computer during the day and built up both a decent sized audience and a reputation as a blogger. When Keven Drum moved from Political Animal to Mother Jones his strategy paid off and he got the job at Political Animal. If someone really wanted a job as a blogger that badly, and had a wife willing to support him while doing this, then spending that much time to build a blog of the quality of The Carpetbagger Report would increase the chances of being hired as a professional blogger. That does sound like a risky strategy to get a blogging job, but it worked for Steve.

It is an interesting way to demonstrate one's ability to perform a job--doing the exact same job for free to show prospective employers what they would get.

Yeah -- treat it as a hobby. In short, "don't give up your day job".

I don't see how you do what you do.

I'm having fun creating the blog and being in touch with others of a like minded belief system. Coming across Liberal Values was manna from heaven for me. TN politics is the answer to the righteous right's prayers. Nashville is only slightly more progressive than the rest of the state. So, it is nice to be among kindred folk across the brogosphere.

The big question comes down to whether you are enjoying what you are doing.

I also plan a follow up post on blogging but I don't now if I'll have time until tomorrow to post.

Well, gee, should I kill my just-getting-started blog? Being the amateur par excellence, I find your analysis both disturbing and illuminating. Disturbing because I'm just so new to it all and ignorant as hell about so much of it. Being a researcher, I often ask myself why I didn't research the Blogosphere before jumping blindly into it. Must have been having a manic escapade, but since I'm in it I'll stay in it for the long hall.

Being an antique, I don't have the energy or maybe even the desire to try to attract the numbers you do. I think I've just always been interested in everything and have an opinion about most of it. So, maybe you could say I just like to hear myself talk. What else am I going to do besides knit? Can no longer ride horses or motorcycles and I no longer belly up to the bar. So, it is, I suppose, a hobby.

By the way, I'm thinking of changing the name to something like The Parsley Page or Parsley's Page. The current name, if mispronounced, can have an unfortunate sound to it.
