The joke doesn’t even make sense about Willow as Bristol was the one who was pregnant. Anyone hearing would assume it was Bristol if the right wingers hadn’t brought Willow’s name into this, regardless of who was at the game. The media reports on the game did not report on Willow being there, making it understandable that the writer of the joke wouldn’t have thought of any daughters other than Bristol.

I am glad he apologized. While I strongly feel that the protests were overblown, I disagree with the people that feel that it was “clear” he was referring to Bristol. The text of the joke was “during the 7th inning of the game her daughter got knocked up by A-Rod.” Since Briston wasn’t at the game, but Willow was, I think it was in poor taste, because he did attack a 14 year old. At the least the writers should have done some research before making that claim.

On the one hand Letterman clearly realized it was a farce but I also think on another level he was sincere. He would not tell such a joke about a 14-year-old and he does have second thoughts about all the Bristol Palin jokes which were told. I do think he was concerned with making it clear (to the handful of people who believe the smears based upon receiving false information) that he did not do what the right wingers claim.

indicated he thought this whole dog and pony show was a farce, which indeed it is.
