[...] I have been waiting for someone to bring this up: Republican County Chair Blasts “Christian Fascists” - Liberal Values - Defending Liberty and Enlightened Thought I’m not surprised that the GOP thumpin’ this week is leading some Republicans to question their association with the religions right. You cannot simultaneously claim to be the party of small government and individual liberty while promoting the use of government to intervene in intimate details of individual’s lives. As usual Ron, you get right to the heart of the hypocrisy. :-)

AriontheBlue,

Interesting thought, but I also fear that, while the Republicans might partially restrain the religious right, and they only give the religious right part of what they want, the Republicans also enable the religious right. If not for seeking the support of the religious right, we wouldn't have restrictions on funding for embryonic stem cell research or all those anti-gay marriage ammendments. If the religious right was on their own without a political party, it is possible they would become even more radical, but they would also lack a means to enforce their beliefs on others.

The Pagan Community has been acutely aware of the ChristoFacists since the Reagan era. They bring a dangerous, fanatical element to public discourse, and actively push a de facto Christian theocracy in the face of . . . well, the 21st century. Be warned: by being entangled with the Republican Party, some control can be exerted on them before they get into mischeif. Should the GOP shed it's pearly evangelical glow in favor of Country Clubs and Corporations, not only will the CFs radicalize, they will be answerable to no-one. That might could be some trouble, later on, even if it makes our national debate more civil on the front end.

Just a thought.
