[...] Edwards has also come under criticism from a couple different people today. Last week I quoted Russ Feingold as calling Edwards the most “problematic candidate.” Feingold repeated his criticism of Edwards in an interview with Huffington Post: “I don’t understand how somebody could vote, five or six critical votes, one way in the Senate and then make your campaign the opposite positions,” Feingold said, expanding on comments he made a week ago to the Appleton (Wisconsin) Post-Crescent. “That doesn’t give me confidence that if the person became president that they would continue the kind of policies that they are using in the Democratic primary. I’m more likely to believe what they did in the Senate.” [...]

Edwards is a skilled trial lawyer. He is campaigning like an attorney before a jury. For an attorney like Edwards, the actual arguments don't matter. Edwards is skilled at arguing any policy positions and sounding convincing to a group of voters to the point where they ignore the fact that he was advocating a different set of positions in the previous case/election.

Excellent points, Ron!

Yet, for many progressives, John Edwards is the Second Coming of Christ. I don't understand it.

Christopher,

With regards to John Edwards and support for AIDS patients, here are a couple of general rules to keep in mind:

1) Does John Edwards benefit monetarily from an action?

2) Does John Edwards benefit politically from an action?

Unless one of the conditions above apply, John Edwards is not interested. Edwards has made a career in law, business, and politics based upon engaging in the actions which most benefit John Edwards while claiming altruistic motivations.

I've written about Edwards on my blog.

One huge issue I have against him is the neglect his displayed to the AIDS community in North Carolina while he was a U.S. senator.

I was living in Los Angeles at the time and employed at one of the largest community health facilities in the county providing care and meds to victims of HIV. There wasn't a week that passed that we saw a North Carolina resident arrive on our doorsteps, unable to get life-saving HAART meds because the North Carolina ADAP program was capped. North Carolina ADAP had a waiting list of several hundred people.

Imagine having to travel across the country when you're ill?

As a U.S. senator, you don't let this happen. As a U.S. senator, you go to the Feds and tell them you need help and quickly. John Edwards didn't do this. It was an appalling lack of concern for a patient population unable to fight and who needs all the help they can get in Washington DC.
