		<description>I understand the basic underlying question about vaccinations. There is always a risk of viruses mutating/evolving to be become vaccine-proof. There is also the danger posed by &#039;extinct&#039; viruses for which we no longer vaccinate, like smallpox, which could be tremendously dangerous if reintroduced into a no-longer-immune populace. Certainly these are real scientific questions.
 
However, I have to agree with Shermer that the risks of most vaccinations are far outweighed by their benefits. We certainly do not want kids getting polio, measles, and scarlet fever as a routine again. The business of growing up was once tremendously dangerous and I&#039;m glad our children are a bit safer these days.
