Sanders Holds Meeting To Consider 2020 Campaign

Politico reports that Bernie Sanders has met with advisers regarding a possible 2020 campaign:

Bernie Sanders convened his top political advisers in Washington on Saturday for a planning meeting that included a discussion of the feasibility and shape of a possible 2020 presidential campaign, half a dozen senior Democrats familiar with the gathering confirmed to POLITICO.

The top-line message the Vermont senator received from the operatives gathered during the government shutdown was a more formal version of the one they’ve been giving him regularly for months: You would be one of the front-runners for the Democratic nomination. And if you want to run, it’s time to start seriously planning accordingly…

Sanders regularly speaks with a close group of advisers and periodically brings top allies in to discuss his political maneuvers, but Saturday’s get-together included planning for the rest of 2018 as well as a specifically slated 2020 component, said Democrats familiar with the session, which was scheduled for the one-year anniversary of Trump’s inauguration. Part of the discussion included gaming out how the rest of the field might look, since 2016’s landscape — effectively pitting Sanders directly against Hillary Clinton — was far more straightforward than the expected 2020 free-for-all…

The senator, 76, has consistently refused to rule out running when asked over the past year, instead pivoting the conversation to other topics.

“The senator is extremely focused on making sure the Democrats win in 2018 and that is the primary goal right now: to retake the House and retake the Senate so we can stop this horrendous Trump agenda,” said Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager and top political adviser.

As I noted in a post yesterday, Bernie Sanders continues to poll well and, despite a false narrative spread by the Clinton camp, this includes considerable support from women voters and minorities. Sanders has been listed as the front runner by multiple sources including The Fix and Vox. Politico also looked at Sanders’ preparations for a possible 2020 campaign in November.

Will Bernie, if he does run, take a foreign policy stance outside the bipartisan foreign policy establishment? Will he mention BDS in any favorable way? Will he mention coups and semi-coups under Dem presidents, like Honduras and Ukraine, rather than taking a pass, especially on Honduras?

You all know the answers to that.

I doubt Sanders would go far enough, but there is a far greater chance that he will address these issues than Clinton ever would have. There have been indications that he does plan to address foreign policy more than in the 2016 campaign. It will be interesting to see how far he goes.

Yes, indeed -> "The Sanders campaign took in and spent far more money than it was comfortable admitting, much of it centered around a mysterious corporation, Old Towne Media, LLC." Good piece. Always argued political spend side never gets enough attention.  https://thedailybanter.com/2018/01/bernie-sanders-2020-hard-questions/

I dont expect you to post this since its doesnt ball wash the grifter but if I say Hillary sucks will that help?

So on the one hand we have well documented proof of major corruption by the Clintons that you ignore, and on the other hand you have an isolated article which is rather trivial compared to what the Clintons have done, and you think it means something?

Yeah.. I wont be voting for him. This guy sounds like Ann Coulter

You have no more proof than I have on this so-called corruption. She has been investigated for over 25 year and zero indictments. Zero . All you have is hatred and a fondness for white male supremacy

  7. 7
    Ron Chusid says:

Wrong. There is considerable evidence which you ignore. How can it have anything to do with male supremacy when the same crimes involve both Bill and Hillary Clinton? I am opposing proven corruption. We have long seen here that you are the racist hater with no respect for either the facts or for justice.

If they are so innocent, provide evidence that Hillary Clinton did abide by her ethics agreement. Where are her disclosures regarding contributions to the Foundation? Disclosures which she agreed to and then failed to abide by, while she was taking bribes. Dispute the findings of the State Department Inspector General report which showed her to be guilty. Dispute the findings of the FBI report which showed how frequently Clinton lied to the press and the American people about her scandals.

The Clintons have been investigated for 25 years and have repeatedly been shown to have committed highly unethical acts to profit themselves.

If you can’t tell the difference between Ann Coulter and Bernie Sanders, you are even more hopeless than I thought.

How about looking at Sanders’ actual views rather than taking a soundbite out of context:

A Fair and Humane Immigration Policy

    djchefron says:

Well slanders makes the ame arguments against immigration as the Reich. Now you may not want to hear that  but just listen to what he said since you and the rest of the unicorn purity loonies want to play this game

I know his views and thats why he lost

Bernie Sanders while having a long hypocritical war record, he's voted against Marriage Equality Gun Reform Immigration Reform Wall Street Reform Amber Alert Healthcare While voting to dump toxic waste in poor Latino communities

  12. 12
    Ron Chusid says:

He did not lose because of his views. He lost because of the Democrats rigging the nomination system against him. If he lost because of his views he would not now be the most popular Senator in the country, as opposed to Hillary Clinton’s favorability being even below that of Donald Trump.

Your feeble attempts to distort his record do not change anything. It was similar dishonest tactics from the Clinton campaign which contributed to her losing.

    djchefron says:

Of course its rigged. Since Black in the south told him to get outbits rigged. Dont you think we are worth more than 3/5ths You along with that grifter holds very racist and sexist views

  14. 14
    Ron Chusid says:

There you go again, falsely attributing views to others. Neither Sanders nor myself think that anyone’s vote is worth any less than anyone else’s, and neither of us are sexist.

As has been established before, you are the only racist in this conversation.

    Joseph Auclair says:

Actually, there are a lot of sound bites of Bernie that could be paired with sound bites of Trump, on trade and on immigration, on issues connected to NATO and our military globalism, on how crooked and rigged the system is, and on how corrupt DC is.

Bernie is not the man to safeguard the republic, our system of parties and elections, or democratic capitalism from the demagogic wreckers who love Trump.

He hates all three even more than Trump does.

And, just like Trump, his popular support does not speak for him so much as it speaks against his supporters.

  16. 16
    Ron Chusid says:

Of course anyone can pair sound bites to give a false impression, but that does not mean that Sanders and Trump have hardly anything in common. He is certainly not perfect, but right now I don’t see any better prospects.
