Mitt Romney Facing New Dangers From Billionaire Republicans, Sarah Palin, And His Past

The night of the New Hampshire primary, Mitt Romney looked almost unbeatable. He had won the first two contests (even if the first was really too close to call). Paul and Huntsman, who came in second and third, are unlikely to provide a sustained challenge, and polls were showing Romney with a strong lead in South Carolina.

A few days later, Romney still looks like he will win the nomination, but his path has become a little more difficult. Romney’s lead in South Carolina has fallen to just two percentage points. Republicans with a lot of money to spend are still trying to block Romney. Even Sarah Palin is asking some legitimate questions. Palin has been pushing to see Romney’s tax returns and, even more importantly, pushing for Romney to prove his questionable claim of creating 100,000 jobs.

Going into the race, it appeared that Romney might please fiscal conservatives except for his support for a health care plan very similar to Barack Obama’s. It was thought that Romney s more serious problems would be with social conservatives who have legitimate reason to question Romney’s support for their positions considering how recently he held the opposite view on so many issues. Now it is his business background which is coming back to haunt him.

On the other hand, Republicans who want a religious fanatic who has out-dated views about women might be happy about this story (while most honorable individuals will be appalled). While a Bishop in the Mormon Church, Romney tried to pressure a single woman to give up her child. According to the account in Vanity Fair, “the church’s position is that if a happy marriage between parents of a newborn seems unlikely, adoption is preferable to single parenting.”
