Turkey of the Day: Georgia Businessman Blaming His Business Problems on Obama

In honor of Thanksgiving, I’ll respond to this news report by declaring Bill Looman the Turkey of the Day:

A west Georgia business owner is stirring up controversy with signs he posted on his company’s trucks, for all to see as the trucks roll up and down roads, highways and interstates:

“New Company Policy: We are not hiring until Obama is gone.”

“Can’t afford it,” explained the employer, Bill Looman, Tuesday evening. “I’ve got people that I want to hire now, but I just can’t afford it. And I don’t foresee that I’ll be able to afford it unless some things change in D.C.”

I hardly see what Obama has to do with his inability to hire more people. The last time I hired a new employee, I even got a tax break thanks to President Obama.

Either this person is an unsuccessful businessperson, which has nothing to do with Washington, or his business is slow due to the underlying economy. The recession was caused by Republican policies under George Bush. Since Obama took office, the Republicans have done everything they possibly could to prevent recovery for political gain.

Yes, we need change in Washington, but the solution is getting rid of the Republicans who are preventing recovery. We need to reelect Obama and to give him a less hostile Congress so that the economy can recover.

There was another amusing side to the story. Someone reported Looman to the FBI as for being a threat to national security. From his account, this was  ultimately transferred to the Secret Service, which did not take this seriously as a threat. Being misinformed and mistakenly criticizing the president hardly makes someone a threat to national security, but it does make Looman a turkey.

It occurs to me that Congress was very much in the hands of Democrats from 2007 to 2010, and the economy got worse.  The decline was slow from 2007 to 2008, perhaps President Bush slowed it somewhat. It went into free fall when the Democratic Congress were joined by President Obama.  The problem is not just Mr. Obama; it is Democrats, who have no clue about what enables an economy to prosper.

This business owner must turn a profit for his family, his employees, and his other stakeholders.  While he labors under a President who seems to struggle with the concept of a free economy, he is wise to sit on his capital, and wait for a leader who appreciates equal justice more than social justice, and has a high regard for the rule of law.

Turkeys are smart birds.  It was Benjamin Franklin’s choice for the symbol of the United States, but others preferred the bald eagle.

It is the Democrats, not Republicans, who understand what makes a free economy work. The economy crashes every time Republicans are in control. How many Republican depressions and recessions do we need to go through? However, Republicans are far better than Democrats at playing politics, and have been more successful in getting their programs which stifle the economy through.

His business owner can sit on his capital if he chooses, but he is wrong to think that it is Obama’s policies which are responsible. Personally I have hired, and taken advantage of Obama’s tax breaks for doing so.

Then there’s this regarding Bill Looman, of U S Cranes:I spoke to Rodney Ashley, who is listed on the American Crane Works website as being in charge of “Field Management.”  Even though the American Crane Works website lists US Crane LLC in Waco, Ga. as an “affiliate,” Mr. Ashley said that it is not an official “affiliate, business relationship,” that the owner of US Crane, LLC, Bill Looman, is a Marine buddy, not an actual affiliate of American Crane Works.  I asked why he’s listed on the American Crane Works Site as an affiliate, and his only answer was that, despite what it says on the website, the companies are not affiliated. Mr. Ashley also said it was not American Crane Works policy to not hire until Obama is “gone.”

Several attempts to call US Crane, LLC (770-574-2367) were unsuccessful as someone at that number just picks up the phone and hangs it up again.  But I was able to find him on his Facebook page, where he confirms it’s “my damn company and my damn policy.”

Looman has a number of anti-Muslim, anti-Obama statements on his Facebook page.

Mr. Chusid, how can you possibly know more about this man’s business than him? The threat of much higher healthcare costs, high taxes on those making over $150k (very often small business owners), and all sorts of policies such as cap and trade, higher gas prices because Obama won’t let Canada put a pipeline to Texas, etc. are fair reasons why it may legitimately be harming his business.

Maybe not, but it is very possible. What do you guys think of Obama blocking the Canadian pipeline. In my opinion Obama has been putting us in a horrific position with Iran, we could have had oil from Canada and been able to really cut off Iran, now we are hamstrung by our need for cheap oil. We also could have helped the riots that their evil regime violently put down.

Don’t liberals chose equality over liberty 99 times out of 100? They’re almost always counter to each other, for example should a business owner be able to tell someone they won’t serve them a meal for any reason? Or, should the top 1% be taxed at nearly 40% of their income to give to those who has accomplished less financially?

    Judi,

That is no surprise. The claim that Obama is preventing him from hiring is based upon ideology and right-wing misinformation, having no basis in fact.,

    Ron Chusid says:

    Ryan,

You sure have a tremendous amount of misinformation regarding what liberals believe, Obama’s policies, and what I said in this post.

“Don’t liberals chose equality over liberty 99 times out of 100?”

That is more a Glenn Beck description of liberal beliefs as opposed to actual liberal belief. Liberty is the fundamental principle of liberalism, but terms such as both equality and liberty need further description, while in general both are desirable, neither is absolute in all situations.

“should a business owner be able to tell someone they won’t serve them a meal for any reason? ”

In general a business owner can. There are exceptions, such as previous situation in the south where business owners would have a universal policy of not serving blacks. That was an intolerable situation based upon considerations of both liberty and equality–do you wish to return to this?

“Or, should the top 1% be taxed at nearly 40% of their income to give to those who has accomplished less financially?”

Frequently the top 1 percent is benefiting from government policies which benefit them, and frequently they are paying a lower percentage rate of their income than the other 99%. Rigging the system for their benefit is not the same as accomplishing more. We currently have a situation where the top 1% has a far greater percentage of wealth than at any time since the guided age. Destroying the middle class in such a manner is not good for the economy, and in the long run isn’t even good for the top 1%

“Mr. Chusid, how can you possibly know more about this man’s business than him?”

I never said that. I cannot say whether he can hire someone. I am mocking his excuse of blaming it on Obama. I don’t know the specifics of his business but I do know both about small business, as I run one, and know about economic policies. Obama’s policies have been beneficial for small business and do nothing to prevent someone from hiring.

Health care reform will lower health care costs. If the cost is a concern, why did the Republicans block aspects of the bill which would reduce health care costs more? The status quo is not sustainable. The private insurance market is collapsing and it is becoming extremely hard for people over 40 or with any preexisting medical problems to obtain coverage. Health care reform will also do a lot to stimulate small business as coverage will be portable and people won’t be tied into keeping jobs in large corporations to keep their insurance. More people will be able to both start their own business and work for small businesses.

Obama’s tax proposals will not affect small business. First of all, most small business owners don’t make $150,000. More importantly, Obama’s plans would not increase taxes on people making $150,000. His proposal would increase the marginal rate on incomes over $250,000. After deductions, a small businessman would need to make over around $315,000 to see a tax increase. Very few do. As this is only an increase on the marginal rate, most people making over this would only pay around $100 to $200 extra a year in income taxes. It is only the very wealthy who would see any meaningful increase in their income taxes.

Cap and trade can hardly be used to justify not hiring as it has very little chance of passing. Cap and trade would also have far less impact on small businesses than other means of responding to climate change.

The Canadian pipeline would have minimal impact on as prices, lowering oil prices in some areas and increasing it in others. It is far more a plan pushed by people such as the Koch brothers who have made their fortune thanks to government money. Projections show that it is likely to reduce employment after a temporary boost during construction. The pipeline would not account for enough oil to have any impact on our dealings with Iran.
