Plouffe Joins White House

I am happy to see that David Plouffe will soon be back working for Obama. Plouffe ran Obama’s 2008 campaign, and perhaps his departure is one of the reasons that the Obama campaign did a better job of controlling their message than the Obama White House. This won’t do anything to stop the misinformation from the right, but perhaps he will get the White House better organized to get its message out to thinking people.

This is quite a bit off topic, but do you have any knowledge of the relative safety or lack there of regarding full body X-ray scans?   All the buzz about enhanced pat downs got me looking into the alternative, my family and I are planning on flying tommorrow  and I’m wondering if my 8 year old could possibly be harmed by going through a full body scan x-ray a couple of times through stop overs within a day.

From what I’ve read (from the news media–I haven’t read anything on this in medical literature yet) the scanners only use a small amount of radiation. The risk of developing cancer from the scanners appears to be extremely low. (Of course statistically the risk of a successful terrorist attack on a plane is also extremely low, raising the question of whether something with a low risk of harm is justifiable to prevent something which is also of low risk.)
