Palin Repeats Usual Right Wing Lies, Claims Obama Would Ban Guns

Conservatives routinely outright lie about the positions of liberals because they stand no chance in an honest comparison between conservative and liberal beliefs. Conservatives also tend to concentrate on scare tactics with their lies, knowing this is often effective with the low-information types of people who tend to vote for conservatives. Today Sarah Palin came out with a real whopper. AP reports:

Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said during a speech Friday that President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies would ban guns and ammunition if they could get away with it.

The former Alaska governor said in a speech to the National Rifle Association that political backlash is the only thing stopping Obama from gutting the Constitution’s right to bear arms. Palin said the public needs to stop Democrats in their tracks, starting with the November elections.

That’s half the argument. How much longer until she also warns that Democrats like Obama will not only take away their guns but take away their bibles?

Right Wing Claiming Kagan Is A Socialist

A few days ago I half jokingly said that we would soon be seeing “various arguments coming from the right wing noise machine as to why Kagan is the most liberal person to have ever been nominated to the Supreme Court.” I underestimated the stupidity of the right wing here. They are actually claiming that she is a socialist based upon her college thesis. As Little Green Footballs summarizes:

Kagan’s undergraduate thesis is titled, “To the Final Conflict: Socialism in New York City, 1900-1933,” and it’s a historical study of the failure of socialism in New York in the early part of the 20th century. To Erickson and his dim followers, this is all the proof they need.

Red State, which first made these claims, was forced to take down the thesis for copyright violations. When I glanced through it earlier in the day I noted items which, if taken out of context, could have been used to argue both that Kagan is a socialist and that she opposes socialism. Considering that the claim she is a socialist comes from the same people who claim that Barack Obama is a socialist makes it hard to take their claims seriously. Whatever her feelings were about socialism when in school, her public record shows that she has been a moderate, not a socialist.

Drug War A Failure

AP reports that the drug war has met none of its goals. Among the views quoted:

Harvard University economist Jeffrey Miron says the only sure thing taxpayers get for more spending on police and soldiers is more homicides.

“Current policy is not having an effect of reducing drug use,” Miron said, “but it’s costing the public a fortune.”

Television Decisions Announced Including V Renewed and FlashForward Canceled

ABC announced some of their programing decisions for next season. V has been renewed but (as anticipated) FlashForward was canceled. If I had to choose between the two science fiction shows I would have chosen FlashForward. Unfortunately the plot probably got too complicated for mass audiences. The show also had problems mid-season and by the time excellent episodes aired later in the season too much of the audience was lost. At least they are going to edit the final episode so that the series doesn’t end on a cliff hanger.

Among comedies Scrubs was canceled a year after it should have ended. While I agree with that decision, I wish they had renewed Better Off Ted, which had become one of the better sit-coms currently on television.

NBC renewed Chuck with no decision on Heroes. I have seen speculation that Heroes might make it back for a short season to wrap things up. This might be as brief as a two or four hour movie.
