Colburn Chief of Staff: Get Teenage Boys To Avoid Porn By Claiming It Will Turn Them Gay

I expect for there to be a lot I disagree with when conservatives hold their Values Voter Summit. I also expect to hear claims about facts which I find to be off the wall. Here’s the worst out of this year’s summit. Sen. Tom Coburn’s  chief of staff Michael Schwartz wants to get teenage boys to stop looking at pictures of naked women by telling them that it will turn them gay. David Weigel reports:

“Pornography is a blight,” Schwartz told an audience in a crowded room of the Omni Shoreham hotel. “It is a disaster. It is one of those silent diseases in our society that we haven’t been able to overcome very well. Now, I may be getting politically incorrect here. And it’s been a few years, but not that many, since I was closely associated with pre-adolescent boys, boys around 10 years of age. But it is my observation that boys of that age have less tolerance for homosexuality than just about any other class of people. They speak badly about homosexuality. And that’s because they don’t want to be that way. They don’t want to fall into it.”

Schwartz told the crowd about Jim Johnson, a friend of his who turned an old hotel into a hospice for gay men dying of AIDS. “One of the things he said to me,” said Schwartz, “that I think is an astonishingly insightful remark… he said ‘All pornography is homosexual pornography, because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards.”

There were murmurs and gasps from the crowd. “Now, think about that,” said Schwartz. “And if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he’s going to want to get a copy of Playboy? I’m pretty sure he’ll lose interest. That’s the last thing he wants! You know, that’s a good comment, it’s a good point, and it’s a good thing to teach young people.”

If you believe this will work, you probably also believed that the people of Iraq would great Americans with flowers as liberators.

So how do we break the news to people like this moron that the reason 10-year-old boys don’t tolerate gays is that 10-year-old boys are immature & tend not to tolerate anything they can’t understand in 3 seconds?

Listening to Schwarz talk, there is something ominous in the way he phrases the term ‘associated with boys of that age.’ How fortunate he is that there is no liberal version of Karl Rove to Mark Kennedy his ignorant ass.

So, I’d like to have a copy of this guy’s browsing history for the past ten years… wouldn’t you?

Not really. I find myself looking at the rising level of my own anger with a certain touch of distaste lately. The fact that I would consider making, or want someone else to make, the kind of comments about Schwarz that the Rove machine made about Mark Kennedy makes me ill. Anger can be poisonous.
I’m trying to get that anger out without crossing a line. It’s getting harder and harder, in the face of all the eager dispensation of that toxin on the right.

The comments speculating on his browsing history bring up a point I was thinking as posting this. I used Playboy as the example as this is the example mentioned, but do teen aged boys really look at Playboy as opposed to all the porn which is easily available on line?

Well, ‘looking at Dad’s Playboys’ is the classic stereotype of course. I’m absolutely certain that is why the magazine title was chosen. Playboy is so well known that one can name Playboy without everyone having to speculate just how one knows so much about the pornographic choices available. If someone mentioned something more obscure like ‘Swank’ or ‘High Society’ a great many of Schwarz’s target audience would have to pretend not to get it. 😉

That said, you’re absolutely right. I am certain that online porn would be the kids’ choice these days.

I would post a convenient example of a free site easily Googled, but I don’t want to link anything like that to your site. 🙂

his logic is the same as “all marijuana is addictive on the first try.” They end up trying marijuana, don’t get addicted, and end up junking everything the school taught them
