Conservative Hysteria and Ted Kennedy’s Legacy

It never ceases to amaze me how conservatives can get so worked up about nonsense while ignoring real problems (ranging from a president who lied the country into a war to the state of our health care system). Perhaps keeping their readers occupied with outrage over invented issues helps to keep them from considering the real issues. The latest is a bizarre outrage over Democrats, and now members of Kennedy’s family, calling on people to carry on with one of Kennedy’s greatest goals in life. It would seem to be a rather obvious way in which to honor Kennedy’s legacy.

Once they get over this they can get back to complaining about the type of mustard Obama uses, claiming Obama is a Muslim and not an American citizen, or warning about fluoride in the water.

On that “Obama is a Muslim” meme…  I don’t recall anyone stating that Obama is a devout or believing Muslim.  As for whether some Muslims would consider him to be Muslim because of his heritage…  Well, it certainly seems possible.  I’m probably still flaged somewhere in a count of Catholics.

It would seem a lot more plausible if Kenya were not a primarily Christian country and he weren’t named after a Jewish hero from the Jewish/Christian Bible. He was clearly raised in Christian setting and holds stolidly Christian beliefs… probably closer to the Republican kind of Christianity than a lot of us would like to admit. The big difference between Jeremiah Wright and the late Jerry Falwell is that Jeremiah Wright thought white folks actually oppressed black people for some strange reason. Wright’s stance on gays and Jews is right out of the Southern Baptist Congress.

My older neighbor recently started going back to church. Since then he has been complaining about Obama’s appointing two Muslims, the country’s going Muslim, dah-de-dah. This guy voted for the President. My temptation is to suggest that he quit hanging out with all those white male Christians and stop being so paranoid and afraid, but be sure to check under his bed each night before going to sleep.

Anonymous is yours truly, thus the sarcasm at the end. I had just finsihed a conversation with this man who actually accussed the President of being Muslim – not that that’s bad – but I was still overcome by the heat of battle when I saw Ron’s post.
