An excellent example of the conflicts between important local issues and the national conservative message.   The Alaska oil check is something that residents of the state feel very serious about. They believe they deserve that money, because the oil companies are making that money off 'their state.' It doesn't matter whether they are conservative or liberal, they want their share of that payout. Despite the fact that it's terribly 'communist.' Especially when you consider that, when the oil companies began drilling in Alaska, it wasn't a state and most of the people getting checks now were nowhere near it. So they aren't even getting paid for what they believe they are getting paid for.     Heh.
