Christian School Student Suspended For Attending Prom

A couple of days ago I reported on a student at a Christian school who was threatened with suspension if he attended a public school prom. He  attended the prom and as a result will not be allowed to attend graduation with his class:

A Heritage Christian senior attended a “great” Findlay High School prom despite warnings from his fundamentalist Baptist school that he would be suspended for doing so.

Tyler Frost, 17, danced and held hands with his girlfriend at the prom, attended by about 800 high school students, officials said.

Frost’s grandmother, Karen Frost, who teaches at Heritage Christian, said she had been praying for her grandson to “make the right decision.”

But Frost said he never wavered on attending the dance with his Findlay High School girlfriend, even though doing so violated Heritage Christian rules that forbid dancing, hand holding and rock music.

Frost is suspended from the 84-student school at 2000 Broad Ave. beginning today, according to a letter sent to Frost’s mother from Tim England, principal at Heritage. Frost has attended the school since kindergarten.

Frost will receive an “incomplete” on remaining assignments and will be banned from graduation ceremonies, according to England. He will receive his diploma after completing his final exams, England said.

Frost’s father, Stephan Johnson, said he plans to file a lawsuit against Heritage Christian because the suspension is unfair and unwarranted, he said.

The principal defended his actions:

In a statement on the school’s Web site, England quoted Bible verses to defend the school’s decision.

“Should a Christian place themselves at an event where young ladies will have low cut dresses and be dancing in them? Isn’t it contrary to the example of Joseph and the (Bible) verses I have stated?” England wrote.

Here in America the fundamentalists are more civilized than in other parts of the world. At least they didn’t stone him to death, although there were threats of expulsion if he was involved with alcohol or sex.

Well, “Heritage Christian” is a private school (isn’t it?).

My sister went to a private religious school that didn’t allow dancing.  I avoid that fate and had a blast in the public system system even though I could barely count, add, read and write when I graduated (I’m not kidding). But dancing was more important than learning at the time. My sister, while she couldn’t dance, was well prepared for college. That was the mandate and responsibly of her school, and they did a good job.

Goes a bit back to this post on the D.C. voucher system (http://liberalvaluesblog.com/?p=7856) and how some commentors (see “bruno”) applauded the idea of a ban on private education. No doubt this will add to their convictions.

However, consider this: Children remind adults to act responsibly on our streets.

“Children from across the country (U.K.) will be very publicly calling upon the small minority of people who think it is acceptable to act anti-socially on our streets and in our towns to change their ways and take responsibility for their actions.
Competitions are being run in schools in 20 towns and cities across England that have received nearly £500,000 funding from the Government’s Respect Task Force to introduce innovative new ‘Talking CCTV’, aimed at getting the public to reflect on their behaviour and the example they are setting to others, especially children. The competitions and activities, such as designing posters that challenge bad behaviour and taking part in neighbourhood litter picks, help educate children about acceptable behaviour while at the same time they are encouraged to use their ‘pester power’ in a positive way – reminding grown -ups  how to behave.

The winning schoolchildren will be invited to become the ‘voice’ of the Talking CCTV in their town or city’s CCTV control room later this year.
Talking CCTV allows operators to talk directly to those involved, when they spot irresponsible behaviour, asking people to stop doing something or to make amends.
    Home Secretary John Reid said:

“We are committed to tackling anti-social behaviour; promoting good behaviour and tackling bad.”

Ah, the Orwellian dreams of the radical left realized through public control of education.

    No thank you.

Clearly he is not planning to stay a Baptist.  So he skips graduation, completes some assignments, gets his piece of paper, and walks away.

Anyone want to bet on whether “Heritage Christian” is accredited?  He probably has to go get a GED anyway now.

People get booted out of all sorts of places for things they do in their off hours.  I hear in California people have had to resign because they  contributed to political campaigns.
