Florida Considers Automatic Hand Recounts

Vacation Blogging intersects with political blogging: I don’t know if it is available on line, but while reading the Miami Herald this morning while having a cup of coffee earlier down on South Beach I came across a rather significant item. There is a proposal in Florida to call for automatically recounting all votes by hand in the case of a close election following the controversy in 2000. If such a proposal had been law in 2000, Al Gore would have been elected president.

    Ron,

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Remember the only counties that were recounted in the 2000 election were those that voted heavily for Gore, and even then Bush came out ahead. Had they recounted the Counties that tend to vote Republican then it is statistically more likely that Bush would have picked up more even more votes.

It would be nice, however, to see Florida get one election right. I don’t think any of us desire to relive that experience.

Also remember that the newspaper consortium counted the rest of the state after the election. They found that Gore made a huge mistake in counting the counties which voted heavily for him. They found that it was the counties which went for Bush were actually the ones were a significant number of Gore votes were missed. Gore would have won in a state wide recount, especially if the ballots were included which both marked Gore and also wrote in Gore.

I did not recall that and will take your word for it.
