Mitt Romney, Porn, and The Dark Ages

Mitt Romney is under attack for religious reasons–this time from, believe it or not, an LDS church-owned newspaper. Hat tip to Bible Belt Blogger who presents an op-ed from the Deseret Morning News:

The nasty taint of porn

Pornography taints everything it touches. Mitt Romney should have understood that. So should the Marriott Corp. and other hotel owners who offer hard-core movies in hotel rooms.

Romney caught a bit of flack last week because he spent nearly 10 years on the Marriott board and yet never tried to reverse the company’s policy of providing pornography on demand, something J.W. “Bill” Marriott Jr., defended in a 2000 letter as being economically important. The corporation controls only a few of the hotels with its name on them.

For a presidential candidate who has railed against pornography, this is not entirely insignificant. Even if the subject never came up at a board meeting, one can argue that at least part of the $25,000 plus stock he was paid annually for his board membership came from the money some hotel guests paid for access to the films.

If even the Mormons are against Romney, he really has problems. I also received email announcing a new web site, ExposeRomney.com which claims “we have video of Romney and the LDS Church leadership claiming absurd beliefs that are destined to drag the rest of humanity back to the dark-ages.”

The Mitt Romney porn scandal has erupted all over the Internet (including my own blog) and has become front-page news in the heart of Mormon Country (Utah, southern Idaho and northern Arizona). Yet, incredibly, the big national media have paid little to no attention to it. I wonder why?

It’s an amusing story, but actually I think it is a good thing that this story hasn’t gone far. It may represent a more libertarian attitude with regards to sex.

I thought this was worth noting due to the irony of Romney being attacked by Mormons, but this is one of several attacks on Republicans where I actually sympathize with the Republican candidate. Of course, should Romney start speaking out against porn during the campaign, this would be a valid argument against him due to the hypocrisy, as opposed to the connection to porn.

Thank you for the call out to our site. Turning the conservative Christians against Romney is just one of our strategies to keep America from slipping further behind. It pains me to see him defend all of Bush’s policies – as if we need more of the same. The Marriott story is excellent. I work at with Mormons and everytime we travel we have to stay at a Marriott, which is fine, but do they not see the contradiction in morality. Some have said “Well we don’t push our beliefs on everyone.” Well that’s a load of BS to begin with, then I suppose it’s OK for a drug dealer to peddle cocaine because he’s not using it and he believes others should make the choice themselves. I seem to remember Geraldine Ferraro getting in trouble for leasing space to a company in the porn industry back in the day. I hope this sticks to Romney.

Do you happen to watch Big Love? I don’t know how accurate a depiction of Mormons this is, but one of the plots going on now involves competing Mormons who are trying to get a deal to purchase machines for gambling. They use justifications such as that the sinners will spend money to support their own holy lives. That comes from the worst bunch. The better guys in this still don’t care about the morality, but at least see it as a way to have financial independence when attacked by the shows bad guys.
