The Seven Words You Can Never Say On The Internet

Like Jennifer Ouelette, better known for Cocktail Party Physics (as if we’d do physics any other way), Liberal Values has earned an NC-17 rating.

Just as we can blame Dick Cheney for the false claims of a connection between Saddam and 9/11, we can also blame this rating on Cheney. The rating is based upon words used on the blog, and by far the worst word here, by their ratings, is Dick. We used Dick, as in Dick Cheney, twelve times. Other “naughty” words include abortion five times, hurt three times, sex (as in referring to someone’s sex), twice and shoot once. Other blogs report similar ratings for similarly innocuous words.

While many other bloggers also report an NC-17 rating, PZ Myers was rated G. It must mean something that it is more acceptable to have posts bashing God than Dick Cheney, and all that cephalopod sex wasn’t even found objectionable.

I had thought that the blogosphere was more liberal on these things than other media. George Carlin’s routine on The Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV just would not have been the same if he had used Dick, Abortion, Hurt, Sex, Shoot, Death, and Corpse.

It uses more words than that, seems to vary. Mine has the same rating, but the words it pointed out on mine were “cocaine” (7x), “gay” (4x), “faggot” (3x, all of them in a story about the supposedly-tolerant Glenn Reynolds co-signing gay-bashing of Greenwald), “drugs” (2x) & the F-word (once, surprisingly).

I was just doing a take off on the George Carlin routine by calling it Seven Words. I used the ones cited here and then just added a couple from Jennifer’s blog to get it up to seven. Many additional words were mentioned by others. After all, if there were only seven, I doubt hurt or death would make it compared to some on your list.

Many of the words people were cited for turned out to come from quoting others. On the one hand, if the goal is to keep kids from seeing words it wouldn’t matter. On the other hand, if simply looking at the tone of a blogger’s writing this could distrort the results. Even “shoot” on my list came from a quotation where someone started a blog post I was quoting saying “You can shoot me for saying this, but…”

I’ve seen on message boards people using “Cheney” as replacement slang for Dick, btw.

I’ve also seen Cheney used as a replacement for other words too, as in “Go Cheney yourself.”

By the way, what is Cheney’s Borg Identity? FUtus of Borg. In Borg lore FUtus is often depicted as offering the Borg symbol of unity to the masses.

Who else in the administration has a Borg identity? Why there’s Alberto Gonzalez whose Borg identity is Refutus which means: It’s not my fault.

What about Bush himself? He is known as BigDoofus of Borg. Well actually BigDoofus of half wit because the Borg refused to give Bush a Borg identity. Even the Borg failed to find a brain in that head. Since they could find no brain, the Borg implants failed to take root in BigDoofus of halfwit. Nevertheless, the Borg in an uncharacteristic show of compassion allowed Bush to glue “falsies”—fake Borg implants onto his person after he let it be known that he thought Borg implants “looked cool.”

Note there are other Borg identities out there.

Rush is known as BigGlutus of Borg.

Ann is known as ShrillShrewtus of Borg.

All of those senators who are crying over their recent losses in the immigration battles are collectively known as BooHootus of Borg.

I once thought that if some alien beings came to earth and listen to human speak for a couple of days they would return to their own planet and report, “We don’t know what this term fuck refers to, but it must be a terrible thing to have happen to a human being.
