John Kerry, A Mangled Joke, And The Truth

Remember when David Letterman told that “Oprah, Uma” joke on the Academy Awards show? Not very funny, and Letterman has never been invited to host the Academy Awards again. Yesterday John Kerry told a poor joke and even mangled the punch line. Definitely think twice before inviting John Kerry to host the Academy Awards, but beyond that this episode should not have very much significance.

Despite its minimal significance, we may never hear the end of this because the right wingers who, just like during the 2004 presidential campaign, are afraid to respond to John Kerry’s actual positions are jumping all over this. Why discuss his actual views on Iraq, making health care affordable, or increasing support for the troops when they can attack him over a mangled joke?

Kerry intended to make a joke about all the mistakes made in Iraq by George Bush, who certainly has not made good use of his education:

“I can’t overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don’t study, if you aren’t smart, if you’re intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq.” [Update: Journalists who have since reviewed the actual prepared text report that it ended with “you end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush.” ]

Unfortunately Kerry got off the script, leaving out the word us, changing the apparent meaning of the statement. If critics want to say he should not be the next host of The Tonight Show after messing up a punch line like this, they may have a point. Beyond that, their attacks on Kerry make absolutely no sense, especially considering his strong record for supporting the troops and his fellow vets.

If the literal words rather than intended meaning are to be the litmus test, certainly there are a couple of gaffes from Kerry which can be exploited, but there are whole books of them from George Bush. By the standards of those who are now attacking Kerry we should also condemn George Bush for “admitting” he is working on new ways to harm our country:

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”
–George Bush at signing of defense appropriations bill, August 5, 2004

More classic Bush gaffes are available here. Do we attack each as if it was a real statement of his beliefs?

This was not the greatest delivery of a joke and, as I said above, this might be used as evidence to argue that John Kerry would make a poor host for The Tonight Show. Kerry did live up to the reputation of Johnny Carson in one way. When Johnny Carson told a poor joke, he would make an even better joke of his failure and save the show. Instead of responding with a joke, Kerry provided an excellent follow up by relaying the truth:

Senator John Kerry issued the following statement in response to White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, assorted right wing nut-jobs, and right wing talk show hosts desperately distorting Kerry’s comments about President Bush to divert attention from their disastrous record:

“If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’re crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.

I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq. It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.

The people who owe our troops an apology are George W. Bush and Dick Cheney who misled America into war and have given us a Katrina foreign policy that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it. These Republicans are afraid to debate veterans who live and breathe the concerns of our troops, not the empty slogans of an Administration that sent our brave troops to war without body armor.

Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they’re afraid to debate real men. And this time it won’t work because we’re going to stay in their face with the truth and deny them even a sliver of light for their distortions. No Democrat will be bullied by an administration that has a cut and run policy in Afghanistan and a stand still and lose strategy in Iraq.”

Update: Transcript of Kerry’s news conference in Seattle today responding to these attacks.

Update II: Even Kos, who rarely misses a chance to dump on Kerry, is defending him today:

Man, there are times when this stuff is more ridiculous than anything a fiction writer or satirist could ever dream up.

So John Kerry mangles a sentence in a public appearance, and the right-wing smear machine and its traditional media enablers are apoplectic. I mean, John Kerry is a, um, junior senator not running for reelection! And he’s, um, a war hero who hates the troops! And um, we hate him because he’s John Kerry!

Trust me, I haven’t been shy to pile on Kerry when warranted, but what a load of bullshit this is. And showing that he has learned from his Swiftboating days, Kerry hit back hard…

Kerry responded perfectly. Perhaps not in a way that the DC wise men would approve, those Gang of 500 fools who have enabled this administration’s disasters at home and abroad.

Perhaps not in a way that will appease the 101st Fighting Keyboardists and their acolytes who would rather talk tough than actually show genuine courage by enlisting in the armed forces.

And sure, not in a way that will appease Republicans hoping to find anything to desperately detract from their crappy policies, crappy candidates, and lie- and hate-filled campaigns.

Yeah, those people won’t be happy with Kerry’s response.

But in this case, Kerry responded the right way. Not by bowing to the full blast of the right wing noise machine, but by standing up to it on behalf of our troops, our nation, and the truth.

Kind of brought back some old times for me…only problem…we got elections to win, so after a brief break, I will make a few more phone calls, then pick up the kids, and have a Happy Halloween…Hope everyone here does the same. 🙂

Leaving one word out of a script is hardly being a moron. If you had to make as many public appearances as Kerry has lately, do you think it is impossible for you to ever make an error? Face it, if you can misspell idiot here, you could also botch a line in a speech.

Now, if we want to speak about morons, here’s a long list of moronic comments to look at: The Wisdom of George Bush

Time to vote the bums out.

Wow, very interesting to see the actual script of what Kerry said which proves it was true beyond a doubt (Darn those press tape recorders) and yet his supporters fall for the “Ooops, it was only a joke routine that he is know trying to lay on us. Well Mr. kerry, we remember when you said you were on a Swift Boat in Cambodia on Christmas Eve and then it was proven that Swift Boats were not ever in the area that you were in on that Christmas Eve. Another of your “Memory lapses”??

    The TruthMaster says:

Here is Kerry’s actual quote. Does any honest person see a joke here?

    From: The AP News Site

Sen. John Kerry has sparked outrage by suggesting that U.S. troops in Iraq are uneducated and not “smart.”

At a campaign event for California gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides at Pasadena City College on Monday, the Massachusetts Democrat and Vietnam veteran said: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

  9. 9
    Ron Chusid says:

On the contrary, it is only the right wing noise machine which says it was “proven” that Kerry was not in Cambodia. When there was an objective review it turned out that Kerry was telling the truth. Reports from the naval archives have shown coordinates for his boat and traced his path from Ha Tien toward Cambodia on a mission that records say was to insert Navy Seals.

No memory lapse on Kerry’s part. Just another lie on the part of the right wing.

Actually you guys got Swift Boat Liar O’Neil and John Kerry mixed up. O’Neil stated in 1971 that he had been in Cambodia and then in 2004 stated he had not been there.

  10. 10
    Ron Chusid says:

    TruthMaster,

Another lie from you. It’s already been established that Kerry botched the joke and didn’t say what was intended. He was talking about Bush, not the US troops.

The meaning is much clearer from the planned statement of “You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq” in reference to George Bush’s poor handling of Iraq.

By the same logic do we take literally every misstatement by George Bush, such as when he he says we “never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people.”

    kj says:

Wow. And to think I missed all this today.

    janet says:

I know–I missed it all, too and it happened in Seattle where I was downtown all day. But I think it is backfiring on the republicans. HA HA!!! If you objectively step back and listen to all this like I have doing now for 30 minutes with radio and TV, all of this does two things:

    1) It makes people wonder that if Kerry had been our president, we maybe wouldn’t have so many dead Americans and Iraq may not be such a mess. It makes you wonder why the Bushies are jumping all over their 2004 opposition again in a Swift Boat way and not focused on this election.

    2) It throws Iraq smack dab front and center—not good for Bushie candidates.

This is great–great comeback by Kerry and he even admits he botched the joke.

  13. 13
    Ron Chusid says:

I’m so releived JK admitted he botched the joke. I was afraid that he had plans to go into standup comedy and would be offended by my comments about his botched comedy routine. 🙂

More seriously, in addition to placing more attention on Iraq, this also helps solidify Kerry as a leading spokesman opposing Bush and the war. Even Kos is defending him today. Not a bad position to be in following next week’s election when attention turns more seriously to 2008.

  14. 14
    kj says:

There is so much (manufactured?) angst from the ‘wingers on the Kerry blog I ventured the idea of seeing if we could persuade Jon Stewart to coach the candidates. (Not that Kerry is a candidate for anything right now, but that doesn’t seem to matter to people who are saying they’re going to now vote Republican.)

Yes Ron, Kerry would be so offended by your comments about his delivery. Maybe Lorilie should be JK’s personal rapid-fire-coach.

Too bad you missed seeing John, Janet!!!

  15. 15
    kj says:

And yes, isn’t all this attention wonderful?

Iraq, the Constitution, Torture Bill, War in Afghanistan, Social Security, Healthcare, Jobs, Deficit, lack of alternative energy R&D…. none of that matters to the rightwingers.

No. John Kerry stepping on a joke line, that matters.

    Ron,

    Great post.

It is fascinating to see the Republican machine in action. This is the David Horowitz, ‘politics is war’ group. They seek to take out Senator Kerry with this event. I don’t think it is going to work.

In fact, Senator Kerry did it a day or two too early. Maybe they can get a convition on Saddam or pull something else out of the hat. I hope that this episode proves to the public that John Kerry has the mettle to be President!

    Thanks again!

And another thing: This just shows that Bush is not being president at the moment or doing anything about Iraq even as the number of Americans is now over 100 dead—instead he is campaigning and complaining about something John Kerry said???!!!

    Ron Chusid says:

    Robert,

Same machine as ever. No matter what Kerry or a Democrat says, it means they are attacking the troops, supporting the terrorists, and are unpatriotic. All to avoid discussing the issues or taking responsibility for their mistakes.

As for Saddam, note my recent posts on this. They’ve rescheduled the announcement of the verdict so that they will have a pre-election conviction.

If nothing else, this will show that John Kerry will not be Swift Boated again, making him a stronger candidate in 2008.

    Janet,

Plus it shows that Bush is too dumb to realize Kerry is calling him dumb by saying Kerry is attacking the troops when he is really attacking Bush.

Forget it. We know what Kerry said and don’t care about those of you who want to spread false claims as to what he meant.

Ron, so Kerry didn’t mean what he said? It was a bad joke period. Not about Bush, just a bad joke from someone so awkward and out of touch that it is laughable. 21. 21
    Ron Chusid says:

    observer,

Kerry meant what he said but left out a word leaving it open to misinterpretation. You are claiming Kerry meant something different from what he meant. Kerry has clarified what he meant.

It’s not simply a matter of Kerry misepeaking. In this day and age where everyone is recorded, every candidate will have misstatements which are repeated. Kerry has made as couple of statements such as this which are open to misinterpretation. There are whole books of Bush’s misstatements.

It’s true, if you don’t do well as a young adult in today’s economical enviroment, then the Military is the only option left.
We have lost and are continueing to lose American troops, who are dying for WHAT?
We ‘as a Nation’ have been lied to and are still being lied to by Mr Bush and his adminstration.
Mr Bush, Mr Rumsfeld and Mr Cheney all managed to avoid military service, while our troops were dying for their country in Vietnam.
Who is really supporting the Troops?
    And;
Who? really should be apologising to our Troops and This Country.
It isn’t John Kerry who owes US an apology.
    It’s Mr Bush.

‘He then said: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

That, Kerry said, was meant as a reference to Bush, not troops. Kerry said it is the president who owes U.S. soldiers an apology — for “a Katrina foreign policy” that misled the country into war in Iraq, failed to adequately study and plan for the aftermath, has not properly equipped troops and has expanded the terrorist threat.

“I’m sick and tired of a bunch of despicable Republicans who will not debate real policy, who won’t take responsibility for their own mistakes, standing up and trying to make other people the butt of those mistakes,” he said. “It disgusts me that a bunch of these Republican hacks who’ve never worn the uniform of our country are willing to lie about those who did.”‘

    Truthmaster,

Do you really think you can just make up all your facts and have anybody believe them?

As kj notes, if you read the post the error was clear. Kerry was speaking about Bush, not the troops. Bush, and now apparently you, are just too dumb to even realize Kerry is calling him dumb.

Are you also so dumb to believe that those who tracked Kerry’s trip into Cambodia, verifying his account, would have tracked his boat the wrong year? Kerry’s account has been verified as much as is possible for a secret mission years earlier. As for being off a year you are probably again confusing Kerry and O’Neil who, besides being caught lying about Cambodia, also made claims about Kerry in Vietnam occuring before O’Neil was actually there.

Regarding who had the mettle to be President, John Kerry wrote a book warning about the dangers of terrorism years before 9/11. In the Senate, Kerry took action to stop money laundering which was helping the terrorists. In contrast, Bush ignored multiple warnings about al Qaeda prior to 9/11 which might have led to stopping the attack. It is Bush who dropped the ball in Afghanistan, allowing bin Laden to escape at Tora Bora. No way the Taliban would want someone like Kerry who would have finished them off. It is also Bush who did exactly what bin Laden wanted in attacking Iraq, or are you so ignorant of middle east politics not to realize that a primary goal of al Qaeda was to eliminate secular regimes such as Saddam’s?

Thanks for the attempt to bail Kerry out with supplying the missing word. But did you read it after you inserted it where you say he meant it to be?

You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you can do well. If you don’t, you US get stuck in Iraq

Sorry but it doesn’t fit there “you US get stuck in Iraq?

    Jeremy,

The punch line was pretty clear. If you are dumb and intellectually lazy like George Bush you will do dumb things like he has in Iraq. People who study hard and show more intellectual curiosity than Bush would not have gotten us into that mess.

Granted its not the greatest joke from a humor perspective, but that’s hardly the point.

Truthmaster is not only dishonest, he isn’t even very smart if he doesn’t understand the meaning of Kerry’s statement when clarified by adding the missing word.
